Nova Scotia’s location, together with large, ice-free deep-water harbours, have been key factors in the province’s development. The Micmac Indians were first to inhabit N.S. before the arrival of settlers from Europe. First to visit, however, were 11th century Norsemen. Inhabited by the French, N.S. later became a British colony. In 1848, N.S. was granted responsible government. N.S. was one of the four provinces that constituted the new federation called the Dominion of Canada in 1867 with Halifax as its capital.
